Getting into the big pond – Panama Canal

PanamaCanal-PacifcEntryToday we completed the downward section of the Panama Canal to enter the Pacific ocean.  During the crossing two catamarans “Widago” and “Zoom” were tied either side to the mono-hull “Waterman” and crossed the canal as a raft.  All went well until a knot on one of the lines that lead up to the top of the lock came undone.  The raft started drifting and zoom was getting very close to touching the wall. Luckily the line was retrieved in time and we were pulling into the middle of the canal again.

To cross the canal we started in the afternoon and progressed up the locks from the Caribbean ocean side to the lake at the top of the locks that feed the lock system.  We overnighted in this lake then the next day started about 7:00am and motored for about 6 hours to get to the downward locks. The image above is our leaving the last lock and entering the Pacific Ocean.
